Envelope from ROME to COPENHAGEN (Denmark), franked by 1852 7b. black on blue in a horizontal strip of three all tied by GRID obliterators in black (folded over top of envelope and ironed for better Exhibit display). Reverse with Hamburg and Copenhagen cds´s and red crayon ´7´ skilling charge mark. An extraordinarily scarce destination for Papal States mail. Sassone 8.

Manuscript ´Raccomandata al Ilmo. Sr. Giovanni Virtue, Aldershot Camp, England´ deleted at top and arrival (May 27) on reverse. Cover used again from Aldershot Camp franked by 1856 1s. green tied by Farnborough Station / 023 duplex. Reverse with Sydney arrival (Aug 17). A most unusual cover. Illustrated in Matha LETTER MAIL TO AND FROM THE ITALIAN STATES, fig. 716. SG 72.

ROME to SYDNEY (Australia) via British Military Camp ´Aldershot´, 1852 6 baj. black on grey with 50 baj. blue, tied by GRIDS to lettersheet from ROMA 19 NOV 859 via the British Military Camp Aldershot where it was re-addressed, franked with a Great Britain 1856 6d. lilac (Scott 27; SG 70) for the onward postage to the Archbishop of Sydney Rev. Dr. Polding, the letter was carried by P. & O. packet PERA to Alexandria, then overland crossing the desert with camels and donkeys to Suez, reaching P. & O. packet NORTHAM to Sydney with arrival marking FE 9 1860, then forwarded to Mudgee (NSW), but finally returned to Sydney on March 19 1860; the GB 6d uncancelled in error because the postman at Farnboro Station cancelled the Papal States 6 baj. instead. Minor imperfections as usual and 6 baj. with small corner fault, otherwise Very Fine. 2016 K. Louis BPP Certificate. Ony 7 re-addressed combination covers with Papal States & GB frankings are recorded in the Karl Louis card index register of which only 4 bear the rare 50 baj. adhesive stamp, and 3 are from the correspondence to the Archbishop of Sydney Dr. Polding (John Bede Polding 1794-1877). Cover from ROME to KONIGGRATZ (Bohemia) carried at double weight, franked by 1867 80c. rose (2) and 1868 perf. 20c. red and 40c. yellow tied by diamond grid with ASSICURATA handstamp in black and French CHARGE handstamp in red. Blue ´St. Michel´ entry marking (April 5) also on obverse of a fine mixed issue three colour franking to an unusual destination. Certs. A. DIENA and BOLAFFI.ROMA a KONIGGRATZ (Alemania). 20 cent. rojo, 40 cts. amarillo y 80 cts. rosa (2). Entire letter written from French soldier in ROME to PARIS with Divisional datestamp at left scored through in ink; with framed TROUVÉ DANS LA BOITE in black on front and franked by 1853 10c. bistre pair tied by dotted ´F´ lozenge and Paris cds (Jan 17) and readdressed to Carpentras. The adhesives being applied over the ´30´ tax marking originally charged and paid. An unusual entire.

✉ EGIPTO. 1925 (June 15). Cover to Alexandria franked by Italy ´Marca Da Bollo´ 1 lire brown, apparently accepted for payment and tied on arrival by ´Paquebot/Alexandrie´ cds, with repeated strike of cancel below. Unusual and appealing cover.

✉ ERITREA. 1889. 10 c. carmine rose, seven examples used on reverse of 1889 double rate registered cover to Rome, all tied by neat strikes of ´MASSAUA*(MAR ROSSO)´ datestamps (Type III). Obverse with perforated registered label and further strike of Massaua datestamp. Some wear but a very attractive franking.

✉ TRIPOLITANIA. 1945 (Nov 24). Cover, badly burnt around edges and resealed with French Post & Telegraphs Office tape, two adhesives cancelled BEIRUT DESPATCH cds´s; typed label on front ´ACCIDENT D´AVION en Tripolitaine´ tied by MARSEILLE cds of eleven days later, reverse with Lebanese Charity Tax tied Beirut and manuscript pencil note: Plane fell in Tripolitania and burned. This piece saved. Unusual and rare example of Crash mail.

Franqueada con sellos franceses de 5 cts. verde y tira de cinco del 25 cts. azul. Mat. ROMBO DE PUNTOS 5104 y fechador SHANG-HAI/CHINE. Circulada a Francia por la vía de Bríndisi. MUY RARA.

✉ JAPON. Sc. 79(2). 1890. YOKOHAMA a USA. 10 sen naranja (21). Espectacular franqueo. Algunos defectos normales en un sobre de este tamaño.

✉ JAPON. 1884 (Nov. 22). Cover to FRANCE franked by top marginal Koban 1876/77 10 sen blue, cancelled by cork cancel in black with YOKOHAMA cds alongside, reverse with scarce YOKOHAMA / PAQ. FR. S. No. 3 octagonal paquebot datestamp (22/11) and faint arrival cds adjacent. Vey inusual combination of a Japanese stamp with French maritime cancel. A rare and attractive cover. Scott 62.

Destination mail envelope to CARACAS (Venezuela) bearing Koban, 5 sen blue (perf. 8 1/2) (SG 115); 5 sen blue (perf. 13) (SG 115) tied by cork cancels with adjacent YOKOHAMA POST thimble cds (pre-paying the U.P.U. rate) routed via San Francisco with transit on reverse. Very rare mixed franking and very rare destination.

✉ JAPON. 1901 (July 26). UPU postcard franked by 1888 4s. bronze bistre, written from KOBE from Italian Naval Steamer used to VENICE from Italian Naval Steamer and cancelled by R. NAVE ELBA datestamp in black.

✉ JAPON. 1918 (May 7). Registered cover from the Japanese Naval Base at Jaluit, Marshall Islands bearing Japan 20s. red-violet tied by ´Jaluit´ in red manuscript and by native cds. Remarkable large cover at 56 sen registered rate to New York, bearing 1913-25 2s. green, pair and single; irregular block of five 10s. blue all tied by scarce KEIJO-SEOUL-CHOSEN in violet. REGISTERED in red at left and Yokohama transit registered label and cds´s on front. Reverse with wax seals and New York oval arrivals (Jan 13, 195). A splendid and extremely scarce franking.

✉ LIBERIA. 1879 (26 Apr.). Envelope, with full contents headed ´U.S. Flag Ship Ticonderoga Monrovia´ to PHILADELPHIA with MONROVIA/LIBERIA handstamp with PAID inserted, rated ´7d´ in manuscript and with red PAID LIVERPOOL BR. PACKET c.d.s. of 29 May, arrival datestamp on reverse; the envelope slightly foreshortened at right, otherwise fine and extremely rare.

✉ LIBERIA. 1894 (22 Sept). Printed envelope from CAPE PALMAS ´pr Jeanette Woermann´ to HAMBURG, bearing Germany 1889-1900, 20 pf. (4) with boxed AUS/WESTAFRIKA cancellations, arrival datestamp (12 Oct.) on reverse; some folds and stains, scarce. R.F. STEUER certificate (2001).

✉ MEXICO. 1818 (14-Feb.). MERIDA a MADRID. Marca PROVINCIA/DE YUCATAN en negro y tasa de 7 reales estampada a la llegada. Rarísima carta trasatlántica desde la Península del Yucatán durante el Período Colonial Español.

✉ MEXICO. 1820 (17-Mayo). S. LUIS a VERACRUZ. Marca S. LUIS POTOSI (nº 5) en negro. MAGNÍFICA y RARA.

✉ MEXICO. 1829. EXPEDICIÓN ESPAÑOLA A MÉXICO. Carta escrita a bordo de la Fragata "Encarnación" en el puerto de La Habana el 7 de Marzo de 1830 por el soldado español Miguel Vigo a su hermana en Ciudadela (Islas Baleares). Marca lineal HABANA en negro y tasa "6 R" estampada en España. En la carta, el soldado relata con detalle la expedición, que dice contaba con 3.500 hombres, así como la toma del puerto de Tampico y de la ciudad de Tamaulipas y la posterior capitulación. En la expedición, según cuenta la carta, se perdieron 1.000 hombres y costó 700.000 pesos. PIEZA EXCEPCIONAL DE GRAN INTERÉS HISTÓRICO, única carta conocida de esta desdichada expedición militar para la reconquista de México. Nota: En 1822, se consolida la Independencia de México, Iturbide fue proclamado Emperador y abdicó en 1823 ante el triunfo del Republicanismo Liberal. En 1827, la conspiración del Padre Arenas, ocasionó varias ejecuciones y la expulsión parcial de los españoles, que fue total en Marzo de 1829. España, creyendo fácil la reconquista por el desorden político, envió una expedición desde Cuba al mando de Isidro Barradas, que desmbarcó en Tampico el 27-VII-1829, pero tuvo que capitular el 11-IX-1829 ante el General Santa Ana. Las tropas españolas volvieron a La Habana y España reconoció, finalmente, la Independencia de México en 1836. Cert. COMEX.
